The Junior Design Awards turned 15 this year, and to celebrate, Junior Magazine decided to do something a little different. Alongside the main categories, they created a bonus Best Small Business award, recognising independent businesses, emerging brands and entrepreneurial ventures across family, parenting and lifestyle. From hundreds of entries, the judges shortlisted 15 and chose three winners. And here's the thing: all three also won Gold in their own product category, so these are small businesses competing with, and beating, the established names. I love this. Small brands often have the freshest ideas and the strongest values, and the least budget to get noticed. Here's who won, and why they deserve your attention.

Gold: Talou. Ellie Whitehead founded Talou in 2023, after a decade in fashion and a career break raising newborn twins. Worried about how much children's clothing ends up as waste, she set out to design joyful knitwear "with every stage of its life cycle in mind". Every piece is 100% wool, recyclable and biodegradable, knitted in small batches in London from deadstock yarn left over at UK factories. When your child outgrows it, you can trade it back, so one jumper carries stories from child to child. Her latest Paperchains Collection goes further: working with Mary's Living & Giving shops for Save the Children, Talou rescued 85kg of wool and cashmere donations too worn to sell, recycled them into new yarn, and gives 10% of proceeds back to the charity. Talou also won joint Gold for Best Children's Knitwear Collection, where one judge, a John Lewis buyer, said: "Really love the closed loop story, a great achievement. Designs are fun and commercial."

Silver: Huddle Baby. Paul Buckley and Christian Ritson, from Holywood in County Down, have more than 30 years' combined experience designing children's furniture for major UK nursery brands, and have raised five children between them. They knew a bedside crib is usually used for around six months, then stored or thrown away, and decided that wasn't good enough. So they set out to make furniture that grows with your child. The Huddle is made from solid beech and works as a bedside crib, a stand-alone crib and a bassinet, then converts into a child's desk and bench, using only the original parts, and it's tested to the British Standard for bedside cribs, BS EN 1130:2019. That takes one piece of nursery furniture from six months of use to twelve years. It's also the tallest bedside crib in the UK, fitting beds with mattresses up to 78cm high. Alongside Silver for Best Small Business, Huddle won Gold for Best Crib/Pod/Moses Design.

Bronze: ODA London. Designer Issy Drosa's ODA London makes bedding and nursery textiles, from muslins and fitted sheets to duvet sets, with organic dyes and eco-friendly packaging. "Crafted for little dreamers, loved by all" is the brand's promise, and the judges clearly agreed, calling it "a really original and exciting brand" with a warm, friendly approach to bedlinen "with a delicious touch of eccentricity". ODA's duvet cover sets also won joint Gold for Best Interiors Product Design (Soft Furnishings), with one judge saying the prints "would definitely bring so much fun to a little person's bedroom".

What this means for you: no business is too small to enter. These three are young brands, and they beat established names in their own categories. A respected award is third-party trust your own marketing can't buy, because parents recognise and trust the names behind it. Enter the awards your customers actually know, and don't be afraid to enter more than one category, as all three of these winners did. Back a win with genuine customer reviews, and share it everywhere. And if you don't win, the judges' feedback alone is worth the entry. Look out for small business categories too: they exist to find brands like yours.

What links all three Junior Design Awards winners, beyond two awards each, is a product designed to last and a founder with a clear point of view. That's what judges notice, and it's what buyers notice too. Congratulations to Talou, Huddle Baby and ODA London, and to everyone on the shortlist. If you're a small brand reading this, next year it could be you.
